Seriously - has the bicycle gone mainstream?
Here are a pair of jeans designed by America's major jeans label that are made specifically for the cyclist, with built in reflectors and U-lock carrying functionality.
Is this really happening... finally? Or do you actually think, like some people in cyberspace have argued, that cycling for transportation is simply a fad?

Are they just for boys? I would love to try these.
Looks like a lot of the features from Swrve jeans, which are awesome. I just bought my second pair at Pushbike.
I hope biking for transportation is here to stay at least in the cities. Don't know about the burbs.
@goddess - I don't know if they're just for boys. Will do some research and let you know.
@Jspider - I was thinking about that on my way to work this morning. When the cities put the bike infrastructure in, that's definitely there to stay. YAY!
These jeans are in the men section of Levi's.
Personally, I think there are gimmicks. I do not see what they have over my regular Reitmans' high waisted jean (elastic band, s'il vous plait!) that go for 30$.
Ok, they are reinforced... big deal.
Cycling is not mainstream, far from it, you would have noticed it right if you route had suddenly become clogged with fellow cyclists.
I think the IDEA of cycling is colonising the media, the intelligentsia, the Fashion industry etc. It WILL become mainstream in the few yes.
It is another example of a fringe activity contaminating some elite group who finds it cool and then trickles the idea down to the masses, like vegetarianism, yoga etc.
Friinges never get to conviced the general pop. directly for some reason... In almost all cases, some celebrity or elite group must sposorise the idea.
Sucks. But hey, what matters is the end result.
@Montrealize - I think it's significant that a major label is making bicycle specific clothing. Banana Republic among other designer labels have featured models riding bikes lately. Cycling seems to be infiltrating the mainstream, and if more cities are simultaneously laying in bike infrastructure, I do feel like something good is happening. Someone is taking note.
I am an optimist, though. :-)
@ Kristin
Definitely, something big is coming our way...
Yet, I don't think I'll be seeing some categories of people on bicycles anytime soon...
We haven't reached the 100th monkey yet.
Monkeys on bikes? Sounds like fun to me! ;-)
hot trousers.
cycling is just image for a company like levis; if you must buy fashionable cyclo-specific pants, rock a pair of Rapha, at least that's a cyclign company.
- URT
that appropriately used semi-colon? you get that for free
@URT - the semicolon is impressive, but learn how to spell cycling, why dontcha? ;-)
Those might be brilliant, if I could (or would) wear jeans to work. If they would just come out with some dress pants that would tie closed at the cuff to keep it off the chain, I'd be happy. I'd also like to see a campaign to put pockets on the back of ALL shirts . . . it's just so convenient.
More bicycle inspired fashion, please!
Cool video! :) I liked it!
